What is Iridology?

What is Iridology and how Irodologist detect health conditions

Iridology, also known as iridodiagnosis, is an alternative medicine technique that uses the colors, patterns, and various other properties of the iris to assess an individual’s general health.(1)

In recent years, naturopathic practitioners have renewed interest in a disease recognition method that is based on detailing characteristics of the human iris. Iridology represents the study of carefully mapped sections of the iris and the assigned organ systems represented by those areas.

Iridologists use iris charts to make these observations, as the iris is divided into multiple zones, each of which represents a different aspect or organ of the human body.

Iridologists generally utilize cameras, flashlights, and microscopes to examine the patient’s iris in order to detect tissue change, stromal irregularities and pigment patterns. The results are then compared with an iris chart, which helps in correlating the various parts of the human body with different zones in the iris.

A typical iris chart usually divides the iris into approximately 90 zones, each corresponding to a different part of the human body. Iridologists believe that the details reflected by the iris are generally the changes in the tissues of the corresponding body organelle.

What health issues do iridologists identify?

A reading in the practice of iridology claims to identify the following:

  • Inflammation in the body
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Stress, such as how much stress a person tends to hold and where they hold it
  • A general amount of strength a person has
  • How well a person’s tissues and other internal structures function
  • The quality of a person’s digestion
  • Where a person’s unexplained symptoms originate in the body

Is iridology a reliable method of diagnosing health conditions?

Iridology is still controversial, as published research does not verify its claims to assist in the clinical care of patients. As opposed to evidence-based medicine, iridology is not supported by quality research studies and is considered pseudoscience.

In 1979, Bernard Jensen, a leading American iridologist, and two other iridology proponents failed to establish the basis of their practice when they examined photographs of the eyes of 143 patients in an attempt to determine which ones had kidney impairments.

Of the patients, 48 had been diagnosed with kidney disease, and the rest had normal kidney function. Based on their analysis of the patients’ irises, the three iridologists could not detect which patients had kidney disease and which did not(2)

Iridology certification

In Canada and the United States, iridology is not regulated or licensed by any governmental agency. Numerous organizations offer certification courses.

An ideologist is not considered a medical doctor, despite even the most in-depth training they may receive to detect ailments based on the features of the eyes.
